What Social Justice means to me is equality for all, regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, religion, color of skin, where you come from or sex preference. Here in Social Justice High school I have learned many things that have shaped my views. I have been taught not only to be successful for myself but also for those around me. When I started as a freshman here in Social Justice High school I came in with no principal, teachers being fired, classes being take away. It was chaos! With all this going on all the seniors gathered to begin working together to make changes. They organized sit-ins, walk outs, and even a silent day. Although we did not even know the principal we still helped with the protest. They informed us about why we were doing what we were doing and all grade levels were agreeing and made changes together. With all this and us working together we were able to get our teachers and principal back. Before I came to this school I always believed that social justice was all about laws government and everything in that category. My first year here I realized how I had no idea what social justice really was. I never realized the ways things work in real life now nor the past. Everything I was taught in grammar school about the past was sugar coated. I didn't know how bad Christopher Columbus treated natives. And I didn't know indians were murdered just because they lived here. This is why i'm thankful I came to this school and was taught things I would have not learned at another school. I learned what Social Justice really is.
Not every school teaches the truth, so this means not everyone knows about the truth we have learned about. Everyone needs to be aware of what’s happening in order to get close to having social justice. If people are not aware of what happened before and continues happen now we won’t achieve social justice. We haven’t been able to achieve social justice because a lot of people are blind to see of the reality of our world. Recently we had primary elections here in Illinois. Our generation is always putting everything on media to let everyone else know what they are doing. So the day of elections I was on facebook just scrolling through my news feed and I came by a status update that really caught my attention, it was this guy saying he was at a voting poll. “I came to vote for trump lol just want to see how tall he will make that wall”. Ever since Trump started running for presidency many people took him as a joke, so straight out the bat I just thought to myself this guy plays too much. I noticed he had a lot of comments on this post so I started to look through them. The point is this guy wasn’t joking he was dead serious he was arguing in his comments with a girl about the elections and about what the candidates have to offer and how they will help us out. Many people think it’s just a status update but it’s much more than that many people don’t see how this closed mind set is the same of many more people. We don’t realize that our skin color or where we come from should not set us apart. So to achieve social justice we have to break these boxes that society has put us in, then when we are not separated by race, skin color, gender, ethnicity and just seen as humans then we will have achieved social justice.
We need to come together to be able achieve social justice. We all need to put aside our differences and work together for what is really important. The people that are mostly discriminated are the minorities, but if we all come together we out number the high class and will be able to achieve our goal in gaining social justice. We will overcome social justice the day we work together. My role in this struggle will be getting everyone to realize that we one another to achieve this goal by taking action and informing people.
I believe getting the word out and making people believe is hard since most people believe that they can’t make a difference or that they don’t affect other people around them with their actions. My fire is spreading awareness on the impacts we cause when we drink and drive. I don’t want to see more people dying because someone made the wrong decision of drinking and driving. We do impact other people based on our own decisions and people need to open their eyes and think about everyone around them and not just themselves. My future career will help because i’m going to help those people that have gotten injured because of car crashes.
